I love a good chai tea latte. I often order iced chai lattes when my husband and I go out for a coffee date. Even though it’s delicious, the chai I am used to drinking usually comes from a carton or a tea bag. It wasn’t until I went to Mexico to visit some family members that I had real homemade spiced chai tea. Mexico seems like an odd place to have chai for the first time, but the family I went to visit had some Indian friends who made a homemade chai tea latte every morning. They graciously shared their treasure with us and once I tried it, I was hooked.

This recipe is my own. I have scored the internet for different ways to make chai tea at home. I’ve tried multiple different kinds of spices in my tea, mixing and matching for different flavors.
Because I wanted to make authentic spiced chai tea, I knew I was going to need some loose leaf black tea, along with whatever spices I liked. I ended up purchasing Tea India CTC Assam Loose Leaf Black Tea. CTC stands for crush, tear, curl. CTC means that the tea leaves have been processed through several rollers which transforms them into small round pellets that make the perfect cup of chai tea. It is really delicious and makes me feel so fancy when I make it. Once you open the bag, you can’t reseal it so I just store my tea in a couple of empty glass jars with lids.

Next up, I ordered The Spice Way Cardamom Pods. These smell heavenly and they crush easily. I don’t have anything fancy to crush them with. I lay them on the counter and smoosh them with the back side of a spoon or the bottom of a glass spice jar.

Cinnamon sticks are readily available just about anywhere you shop. I ordered these ones and they work perfectly.
Once you have your tea made, make sure you strain it before you drink it. You can do this by putting the spices in a tea strainer before you put them in the water, or you can use a mesh strainer over the top of your mug and pour the tea through it.
The following homemade chai tea latte recipe is the one I like best and what I make on a regular basis. Even my kids enjoy it! I often make a large pot of it and let it sit on the stove for everyone to enjoy. If you need less, cut the recipe in half, or even in quarters.

- Bring to a boil and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Pair some chai tea latte with one of my breakfast recipes! Try it with the carnivore dutch baby recipe, or my Momma’s breakfast casserole.
