In the spring, I am always ready to change things up a bit in our homeschool. This year I decided to do a week long unit study for St. Patrick’s Day. We enjoyed learning the true story of St. Patrick and I know your family will to.

Resources We Used
The True Story of St. Patrick
This book shares the true story of Patrick, a martyr who loved Jesus more than his own life. After escaping slavery, he returned to Ireland to share the gospel with the people who made him a slave.

This book definitely did not cost me the price Amazon is currently wanting for it, but I am leaving a link so that you can check the price since they do change often.
Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato
An Irish folktale about a giant potato. My husband surprised me with this book after I left it in our Amazon cart when I was researching books to use for this study. This is such a fun story! My kids loved it and it gives a great peek into Irish culture.

Taking Europe for Jesus
Part of the elementary history series from Generations, this book contains a chapter about St. Patrick that is packed full of information. This book makes a good addition if you have older kids who are joining you for this study.
St. Patrick’s Day in the Morning
This is such a sweet book about a young boy who is eager to march in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

YouTube Videos
On the first day of our study, we enjoyed watching this video with Irish dancing.
Art for Kids Hub:
We love to use Art for Kids Hub in our homeschool! They have so many drawing videos that are simple and fun, and they always turn out amazing! We used several of their videos to draw some fun St. Patrick’s Day designs.

Drive by History:
We enjoyed this video from Dave Stotts about the history of St. Patrick’s Day. This is the long version of the episode. There are shorter ones available though.
Notebooking Pages:
I have a lifetime membership to notebookingpages.com. It has been a fantastic resource in our homeschool and I am constantly printing off pages for my kids to fill out. We like to create 3 ring binders each year with their school work. This makes a great souvenir for us to look back on.

Videos
Along with the couple of videos we watched on YouTube, we always enjoyed Torchlighters: The Story of St. Patrick.
Food!

To go along with our St. Patrick’s Day unit study, we made a delicious feast of yummy food. Our feast included a corned beef, some green jello “deviled” eggs, Irish soda bread with butter and jelly, and some regular deviled eggs.

If you’d like to see how we used this study, I made a full video of our week over on my YouTube channel, Homeschooling the Herd!
