Today I’m sharing my choices for middle school homeschool curriculum!
Middle school is the age in our family when my kids start to work much more independently. They tend to get bored sitting around the table with the rest of us and need to be able to get their work done on their own and move on for the day. I have two kids in middle school this year, one in 8th grade and one in 6th grade. They will be doing pretty much the exact same curriculum, except for their math and part of the their language arts.

Math
For math this year we have chosen to use CTC Math. In the past we have always used Math Lessons for a living education from Masterbooks. I love, love, love all things Masterbooks. But I also have had an increasingly more difficult time keeping up with all the grade levels of each child for math. I was forgetting to grade the pages of those who worked on their own and then a few weeks later would realize that they were not doing great at all. So this past year I decided to try online math and it has been a hit! The kids enjoy having some computer time and I like that I can see, at a glance, how each child is doing. I also have to option to set a goal score for their lessons and if they don’t reach that goal they have to redo their lesson. I am so thankful for this and it has made my life a little easier.

Language Arts
The majority of my middle schooler’s language arts will be done at co-op this year. They will be using IEW Bible based writing lessons. My 8th grader has used IEW before and did great. My 6th grader is new to IEW but she is an excellent writer and she enjoys writing so I know she will do well.
Along with IEW they will both be using level 4 of The Good and the Beautiful handwriting. They know a little cursive but still need lots of practice and I think this level will be perfect for them.
My 8th grader will also be using series C of the Dyslexia games books from The Thinking Tree. He has a bit of dyslexia and I think these books will be helpful for him. They use art and logic to letter recognition and spelling.
For reading I have required that they finish at least 2 books from the What A Character Series by Masterbooks. These books look so fun and they will go along with their history theme for this year.

They both will be doing plenty of copywork and written narration along with the rest of their language arts curriculum.

Science
Science this year will be done at co-op along with assigned homework. They will be using Apologia’s General Science and student notebook. I am really excited for them to have the opportunity to participate in a science class outside of home. I’m not a science teacher, I dislike doing the experiments so I feel like they have missed out a bit on the fun that science can bring. Thankfully they will be performing the labs at co-op and they are both excited to do it.

History
For history this year my middle schoolers will be studying American History along with US geography. For American History they are reading through America’s Story 1 from Masterbooks. They are also using Meet the Chief from Masterbooks and filling in a notebook that I created for them from Notebookingpages.com.

Along with America’s Story 1 and Meet the Chief, they will be reading through The Children’s Atlas of the USA and Passport to America from Masterbooks. When they complete a state, they will color the state on the map and then label the capital city.

Bible
The last subject they will be doing is Bible. This is going to be super simple. They read their bible everyday and then they do a written narration on what they read. They will discuss this with their dad once a week and talk about what they’ve learned.

And that’s it! They aren’t doing a ton of extra stuff, mainly just the required subjects. I hope this was helpful for you. Let me know below what your middle school student will be using for their homeschool curriculum this year.
