There are so many great books about this topic, but today I’d like to share some of our family’s favorite Reformation Day books for kids:

“Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed the World” by Paul L. Maier: This beautifully illustrated book introduces young readers to Martin Luther, the father of the Reformation. Through engaging storytelling and vibrant illustrations, children will learn about Luther’s journey, his 95 Theses, and his courage in standing up for his beliefs.

“Reformation Heroes” by Diana Kleyn and Joel R. Beeke: This book would be great for an older elementary or middle school aged child to read. It is a chapter book that is packed full of information about several reformation heroes. There is enough info in this book to last for a couple months worth of study.

“John Calvin” by Simonetta Carr: This book is part of the Christian Biographies for Young Readers. It introduces children to John Calvin, another influential figure of the Reformation. Through simple language and fun illustrations, young readers will discover Calvin’s teachings and his impact on the Protestant faith. There are a lot of books in this series and they are all fantastic. Several of them are of Reformation heroes (Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, John Knox, John Owen, etc.) and others are about some of the early church fathers.

“The Reformation ABCs: The People, Places, and Things of the Reformation—from A to Z” by Stephen J. Nichols and Ned Bustard: Perfect for younger children, this book introduces the key people, places, and concepts of the Reformation. With each letter of the alphabet, children will learn something new about this pivotal period in history.

“The Lightlings” by R.C. Sproul: While not directly about the Reformation, this allegorical tale by R.C. Sproul introduces children to essential Christian concepts. Through the story of the Lightlings and their encounter with the Prince of Light, children will learn about sin, redemption, and the victory of Christ.

“The Church History ABCs: Augustine and 25 Other Heroes of the Faith” by Stephen J. Nichols and Ned Bustard: Although not solely focused on the Reformation, this book introduces children to key figures in church history, including many reformers. With each letter of the alphabet, children will meet heroes of the faith who played significant roles in shaping Christianity.
These books not only teach kids about the Reformation but also inspire them to appreciate the courage, faith, and convictions of those who stood up for biblical truth. I hope your family will enjoy learning about the Reformation with some of our family’s favorite books!
