During the Christmas season I like to put aside our regular school curriculum and really focus on the reason for the season. We have several Christmas books for kids on our shelves that have become beloved favorites and today I’d like to share them with you!

So many Christmas books tend to teach children about everything but Jesus. Santa, gifts, giving, food, traditions, Christmas trees, ice skating and more. While these are all fun things and they have their place, I believe that as Christians, we should have our main focus on Jesus Christ.
While we don’t know the exact date that Jesus was born, December 25th has become a national holiday, which is set aside for the specific purpose of celebrating the birth of the Messiah.
Teach them the gospel!
The Bible teaches us that without Christ, our lives would be hopeless. When we examine our own hearts in the mirror of God’s law, the Ten Commandments, we can see that we have absolutely no chance of making it Heaven on our own. There is no way we can fulfill the law of God, which makes us holy.
Jesus is the solution to this problem. This is why the gospel is the good news! Apart from Christ, we would all be headed for hell. But God loved us so much that he sent Jesus to be born of a virgin, bear the weight of our sin on the cross, suffer and die in our place and then rise again so that we might have new life in Him. For those who believe the gospel, God grants everlasting life.
This is what I want to teach my children about during the Christmas season. I want them to cherish the birth of the Messiah and see the love that the Father has for His children. I want them to understand God’s holiness and their own sinfulness so that they would turn from their sin and put their trust in Jesus alone for salvation.

Below are some of our family’s favorite books to enjoy during the Christmas season.
These books will help point your kids to Christ. They will lead to many wonderful conversations about his love and goodness. And they will have your children begging for more.
The Donkey Who Carried a King
While not specifically about Christmas, this book by R.C. Sproul will help children understand Christ’s work on the cross, all from the viewpoint of a little donkey.
The Crippled Lamb
This book is so sweet. The story follows a little lamb named Joshua, who has a lame leg. He feels left out when he can’t do what the other lambs do. But we find out that God has a special job for Joshua. Joshua’s story will help you to encourage your own children that God has a plan and purpose for each life, even if we sometimes feel like we don’t fit in.
Bear Stays Up for Christmas
Ok, this book is not about Jesus at all. But it is one of our favorites. My kids and I all adore the Bear books and this one is no exception. It is a sweet story of friends helping friends.
Come, Let Us Adore Him
This book by Paul Tripp is an excellent family devotion to use during the Advent season. Chock full of theological truths, it will spark conversations that are sure to impact your children’s hearts (and your own!).
Humphrey’s First Christmas
Of all the Christmas books for kids that we own, this one is probably my most favorite. The illustrations in this book are top notch. They are so fun and so is Humphrey! This is his story of being a camel who belongs to one of the three wise men who bring gifts to baby Jesus.
On This Special Night
This one is very well loved. Our copy is just shy of completely falling apart because we have loved this book so much! It is a wonderful story that tells the birth of the Messiah.
Along with these books, here are some Christmas books for kids that are on my wishlist.
- Mortimer’s Christmas Manger
- The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree
- Little Christmas Carol
- The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey
