My kids love playing with homemade play dough, but it can get expensive to buy over and over at the store. When my oldest daughter was in preschool, a friend gave me this recipe and I’ve been using it for years since then!
With only a few ingredients (which you most likely already have in your cupboard or pantry) you can mix this up for the kids to play with in only a few minutes. The kool-aid is optional as it’s only function is to give color and smell to the homemade play dough. I have made this with and without kool-aid with great success.
Food coloring is not a good option to color this play dough though. It can stain little hands and make quite a mess. If you want color, its best to stick with kool-aid.

How to make it
This homemade play dough really simple to make. If you have a stand mixer, it’s even easier. I start by putting the kool-aid in the mixer and then adding the water, oil and salt.

Next I add the flour, one cup at a time until the texture and consistency of the dough is right for playing. Make sure to knead this long enough for everything to mix together really well, preferable 5-10 minutes.

I’ve made a video that shows the whole process! Check it out below or on my Youtube Channel.
Homemade Play-dough
Ingredients
- 2 packets kool-aid same color/flavor
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1/2 cup salt
- 3 tbsp oil I used canola
- 4-4.5 cups all purpose flour
Instructions
- Combine kool-aid packets, boiling water, oil and salt in stand mixer.
- Add flour one cup at a time until the dough reaches a play-dough type consistency. You don't want the dough to be sticky but you also don't want it to be too dry.
- Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes to make sure everything is mixed well.
- Dump the dough onto the table and knead by hand a few times to make sure it's perfect, then let the kids play!
This homemade play dough will give your kids lots of hours of fun! It’s a great addition to our homeschool and helps keep my little kids’ hands busy while I read. It’s also fun for mom to play with sometimes. Have a blessed day friend!
