Over on YouTube I recently shared the homeschool curriculum my family is using this year for 10th grade. My son has struggled with dyslexia and reading is not his favorite thing to do. He isn’t a great speller and writing is difficult. I know he’s not alone in this and it’s easy for moms of dyslexic kids to feel like they aren’t doing enough for their kids.
Great for Dyslexic Children
The curriculum I chose is very minimal and simple. Most of it comes with an audio version of the physical book. He doesn’t need to be overwhelmed with books to read or papers to write. Instead, he needs minimal curriculum and time to work. So, this year, he is sticking to his core subjects. He isn’t taking any elective classes because I want him to have the time he needs to really improve on his writing skills.
Bible
For Bible he is using Grasping God’s Word with my husband. It comes with a textbook and a workbook. The textbook is available for free on the Hoopla app, so he is able to listen while he is following along.
History and Science
We love Masterbooks around here and so for history he is reading America’s Story 3 and World’s Story 1. Last year he ready America’s Story 1 and 2, and next year he will complete the World’s Story series. So far, we have been able to purchase the audio for all of America’s Story and World’s Story 1. Lord willing, World’s Story 2 and 3 will be available in an audio version by next year. He is just reading these books. I am not requiring him to complete any worksheets or writing for history this year.
We attend a co-op every week at our church and this year the high school class is doing a science course. They are using Apologia’s Physical Science. The books for this class are a bit intimidating but I think it’s going to be really good for him. Thankfully I was able to find the MP3 version of the textbook so he can listen while he’s following along, and then fill our the student notebook. They will be doing the experiments at co-op and I think he’s going to enjoy that.
Math
We recently switched to CTC Math in our homeschool and we absolutely love it! It has been such a blessing for us to use an online math curriculum. I was struggling to keep up with the grading and correcting of a physical math program and so we decided to find something that will grade and keep track of their progress for us. CTC Math has been wonderful and I don’t see us changing math curriculum ever again.

English
English has been a little bit of trial and error so far. In my video on YouTube, I said that he was going to use Writing Strands from Masterbooks. He did start using it but we decided that it’s not a good fit for him. We have not switched that up and we are using Language Lessons for a Living Education along with Khan Academy grammar videos on YouTube. I have started to teach my 3 older kids English and grammar all together and I think it’s so fun to have the 3 of them at the table with me again. I’m always a bit sad when they get older and begin working independently so I am enjoying teaching them as a group again.
Along with Language Lessons for a Living Education, he is using Dyslexia Games from The Thinking Tree. This is a curriculum that uses art and logic to retrain the brain and accelerate the process of learning to read. There are 3 different levels so make sure you go to their website to find out which one would best suit your student.

For my son, less is more and I think this year is going to be a great year for him.
